What is Homeowner’s Insurance?
Here’s a breakdown of the coverage typically seen on a homeowner’s policy:
Dwelling: as the name implies, dwelling protects the main structure against all covered perils. The amount of dwelling coverage should be equal to the expected cost to rebuild in the event of a total loss (not market value). We run a thorough replacement cost analysis to ensure our customers are completely protected.
Other structures: covers any structure on your property that is not permanently attached to the main structure. (sheds, detached garages, and fences for example). On most policies, this is covered for 10% of the dwelling limit but can be increased, if necessary.
Personal Property: covers personal belongings. While appliances, furniture and clothing are generally the first things that come to mind, this coverage extends to pretty much all belongings as well as intangible personal property such as intellectual property or digital assets. Whether you purchase from us or another agency/direct writer company, please make sure your items are covered for full replacement cost (current market value) as opposed to actual cash value (depreciated value).
Loss of Use: covers your living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to a problem covered by your homeowners policy.
Medical Expenses: covers medical expenses for guests who are injured on your property. Please be aware that this coverage does not extend to you or other household members.
Liability: protects the insured against injuries that occur on their property (slip and falls or dog bites, for example) or if they accidentally damage someone else’s property. In the event of a lawsuit, personal liability covers defense costs, settlements and court ordered judgements up to the policy limits.
Scheduled personal property: an optional endorsement that insures high-value items (such as jewelry, fine arts and collectibles) at their full value. This is an extremely broad coverage–even if the item is accidentally lost or damaged the insured can be compensated for it’s full value. Please note that documentation (usually appraisals) are required to confirm the items value and ownership.
